Sinek introduces the Golden Circle—three concentric rings labeled Why, How, and What. Most businesses communicate from the outside in: they start with what they do, explain how they do it, and rarely get to why it matters. But great leaders, like Apple or Martin Luther King Jr., inspire by starting with WHY.

Your WHY is your purpose, cause, or belief. It’s what gets you out of bed and drives everything else. When your business, messaging, and behavior align with your WHY, people don’t just buy—they believe.

Step-by-Step Discovery Instructions:

  1. Reflect on your origin story. What motivated you before money entered the equation?
  2. Identify a moment when you felt most proud or fulfilled in your business.
  3. Write a rough WHY statement: “I believe [core belief], so I [what you do].”
  4. Share it with someone who knows you well and ask if it feels authentic.
  5. Observe where your current work aligns—or misaligns—with your WHY.
