By: Joseph James Udoh |Columnist | WBN NEWS Africa | May 26, 2025In Nigeria’s fast-paced market, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly embracing technology to boost growth, efficiency, and market reach.

With over 40 million SMEs contributing nearly 50% to the GDP, digital transformation is becoming a vital driver of sustainable business success.

Mobile connectivity plays a key role, with over 200 million mobile subscriptions and growing internet access. SMEs are using mobile platforms to connect with customers, process payments, and manage operations. Fintech tools like Flutterwave, Paystack, and Moniepoint have simplified digital payments, reducing cash reliance and enhancing efficiency.

E-commerce platforms like Jumia and Konga, along with social media such as Instagram and WhatsApp, allow businesses to reach wider audiences, promote products, and build customer relationships affordably. Digital marketing tools further help in gathering insights and strengthening brand loyalty.

Cloud-based solutions for accounting, inventory, and customer relationship management (CRM) are also gaining popularity, helping SMEs maintain accurate records, optimize stock, and personalize services—key to competitiveness and growth.

Remote work technologies are enabling SMEs to build flexible teams and collaborate globally, fostering innovation in sectors like digital services, education, and consulting.

However, challenges persist

Poor infrastructure, low digital literacy, and high internet costs hinder progress. Addressing these requires ongoing investment in broadband, digital education, and supportive policies.

Ultimately, Nigerian SMEs that adopt and integrate digital tools are best positioned to thrive in a rapidly evolving business landscape.
