Canadians may face another disruption in mail service as Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) inch closer to a May 22, 2025 deadline without a new collective agreement in place. If a deal isn't reached, over 55,000 workers could strike again—just months after the last walkout in late 2024.
The previous strike began on November 15, 2024 and ended on December 17 after the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) ordered employees back to work. During the strike, over 215,000 passports were delayed, along with millions of packages, just ahead of the holidays. Though Canada Post has since returned to normal operations, negotiations have now stalled once more. Talks resumed in April, but on May 13, Canada Post called for a pause to reset discussions and prepare new proposals.
What Could This Mean for You?
If another strike occurs, the impact will go beyond late birthday cards and online shopping delays. Most municipal mailings—including property tax notices, business licences, utility bills, and dog licence renewals—are sent via Canada Post. Municipalities warn that late fees, penalties, and interest charges may still apply, even if a mailed notice is delayed due to a strike.
“I didn’t get the mail” is unlikely to be accepted as an excuse for missed payments.
How to Protect Yourself
Here are some proactive steps to reduce your risk:
- Sign up for e-billing with your municipality, utility providers, and financial institutions.
- Use digital reminders or calendar alerts for tax and licence renewal deadlines.
- Access online portals for city services and monitor them for updates or invoices.
- Send payments electronically using e-transfers, online banking, or credit cards.
- Track strike updates via Canada Post, CUPW, and municipal websites.
With the threat of a summer strike looming, staying organized and going digital where possible is the best way to avoid frustration and financial consequences.
