Byline: Vancouver, BC – April 20, 2025

British Columbia’s film and television industry is poised for a blockbuster comeback in 2025, with new tax incentives, growing production activity, and strategic investments fueling optimism across the sector.

After weathering a turbulent 2023 that saw economic slowdown and widespread job losses due to global strikes and a drop in content demand, the province is now turning the page. A combination of government support and surging production schedules is driving a renewed sense of momentum.

Big Boost from Tax Incentives

The provincial government has rolled out enhanced tax credits aimed at drawing more film and television projects to BC. The Film Incentive BC (FIBC), which supports Canadian content, has been increased from 35% to 40%, retroactive to January 1, 2025. Additionally, international productions can now access an expanded Production Services Tax Credit (PSTC), which rose from 28% to 36%.

A special bonus incentive is also being offered: an additional 2% credit for large-scale productions with budgets exceeding $200 million. Industry insiders believe these competitive tax rates could make BC one of North America's most attractive filming destinations once again.

Support for Emerging Voices

In a bid to support diversity and inclusion, Creative BC has announced a $250,000 investment in emerging and equity-seeking filmmakers. This funding will support 25 new projects and is designed to break down long-standing systemic barriers within the industry.

"This initiative is a critical step toward ensuring the BC film industry reflects the diversity of our communities and the stories we tell," said a Creative BC spokesperson.

Production Rebounding

As of mid-April, Creative BC reports a notable rise in active productions throughout the province. Studios and crews are ramping up quickly, with more shows and films listed as either currently in production or preparing to start. This revival is expected to restore many of the jobs lost during the downturn and inject significant revenue back into the provincial economy.

Going Green on Set

Sustainability remains a top priority. BC continues to lead in eco-conscious filmmaking with programs like Reel Green™, which helps productions implement environmentally friendly practices.

Outlook for 2025 and Beyond

With enhanced financial incentives, a growing talent pool, and a strong infrastructure of studios and support services, British Columbia’s film industry is on track for a record-breaking year. Projections suggest the industry could contribute over $4 billion to the province’s economy by the end of 2025—well beyond pre-pandemic levels.

As cameras roll and new stories begin to unfold on screens around the world, BC is once again proving why it’s one of the most desirable filming locations in the global entertainment landscape.
