LinkedIn remains one of the most powerful platforms for professional networking, but many users continue to make a critical mistake: sending generic, salesy connection requests that are often ignored or declined.

Experts say that today’s decision-makers are more selective than ever when accepting new contacts. With inboxes flooded with copy-paste pitches and vague introductions, personalization and authenticity have become essential.

According to digital branding strategist Megan Howard, the key is to lead with connection, not conversion. “People don’t want to be sold to—they want to be understood,” Howard explains.

To improve connection acceptance rates, professionals are encouraged to follow a few best practices:

  • Personalize the message by referencing how or where you found the person (a post, group, or event).
  • Establish common ground, such as mutual interests or industries.
  • Offer a question or insight, rather than a pitch.
  • Keep it concise, ideally under 300 characters.

Here’s an example of an effective request:
“Hi Mark, I saw your comments on the small business funding thread—really valuable insights. I’d love to connect and follow more of your content.”

While the platform continues to evolve, one principle remains unchanged: authentic relationships drive real results. Building trust from the first click can lead to long-term opportunities, partnerships, and growth.
