Vancouver, BC – In a private ceremony Thursday morning in Council Chambers, Vancouver City Council bestowed the Freedom of the City on Kitsilano's very own Ryan Reynolds, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions as a Vancouverite, philanthropist, and cultural ambassador.

Mayor Ken Sim presented the city's highest honour to the Hollywood superstar, who has never forgotten his Vancouver roots despite achieving international fame. "Deadpool will never have to worry about paying for a pass to Kits pool ever again," quipped one observer, referencing the lifetime recreation pass that comes with the award.

"Today we celebrated one of Vancouver's own whose hometown pride has taken our city's name around the world," Mayor Sim said during the ceremony. "Ryan Reynolds isn't just a movie star, he's a proud Vancouverite who never forgets where he came from and always finds ways to give back."

The Kitsilano native has transformed his local identity into a global brand, earning recognition from more than 51 million Instagram followers as @vancityreynolds. From his days at Kits Pool to starring as Deadpool, Reynolds has consistently showcased Vancouver on the world stage.

Reynolds' philanthropic efforts have made tangible impacts both locally and globally. Together with wife Blake Lively, he has supported Covenant House Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Following the devastating 2021 BC floods, the couple donated to the Red Cross and encouraged their massive social media following to contribute. Their generosity has provided crucial support for homeless youth and families across the region.

Their charitable work extends far beyond Vancouver, including major contributions to Food Banks Canada during the pandemic, matching $1 million in donations for displaced Ukrainian families, and funding Water First Education & Training to support young Indigenous adults.

"This means the world to me," Reynolds said, accepting the honour. "Vancouver shaped who I am, and I carry it with me in everything I do. To now be part of its history in this way is both humbling and surreal."

The Freedom of the City award, granted only in exceptional cases, includes a certificate, the Freedom Medal, a signature in the Book of Freedoms, and lifetime access to city recreation facilities. Reynolds joins an exclusive group of recipients who have brought national and international recognition to Vancouver through their achievements.
