Part I of III

Fiscal sponsorship is increasingly becoming a transformative model for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) across Africa.

This innovative partnership allows smaller community-based organizations to access funding, compliance infrastructure, and strategic visibility by operating under the legal and tax-exempt status of a larger, established nonprofit. A compelling case in point is the pending partnership between Let’s Make The Difference Inc. (LMTD), a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Advocacy Initiative for Youth Development CBO (AIYD), a grassroots organization in Kenya, scheduled to be signed on July 4th, 2025.

This partnership is set to unlock a new phase of development for AIYD by granting it access to LMTD’s donor network, grant application resources, and financial accountability systems. For many African NGOs, access to international funding is often blocked by the high administrative and legal thresholds required. Fiscal sponsorship bridges this gap, enabling project teams to focus on implementation and community impact while their sponsors handle compliance, reporting, and donor relations.

For LMTD, the legal and mission-aligned benefits of this partnership are especially significant. The founders of AIYD were among the earliest participants in LMTD’s refugee empowerment programs and have served as board members of the U.S. nonprofit for the past three years. This longstanding relationship adds a layer of trust, shared vision, and legal alignment that strengthens the integrity of the fiscal sponsorship. It also enhances LMTD’s eligibility for refugee-focused grants while reinforcing the organization’s commitment to elevating leaders from within displaced communities.

Beyond administrative ease, fiscal sponsorship offers a built-in layer of legitimacy. When organizations like AIYD operate under the umbrella of internationally recognized sponsors like LMTD, donor confidence increases, partnerships grow, and long-term sustainability becomes achievable.

This model offers a replicable solution for NGOs working on limited budgets in Africa. By strategically aligning with global sponsors, these organizations can break funding barriers, scale their operations, and ultimately accelerate the socio-economic development of their communities.
