Africa’s push toward digital sovereignty has received a significant boost with the launch of Qubit Hub, a new artificial intelligence research and innovation centre established through a partnership between Qhala, Amini AI, Angani, and iXAfrica Data Centres in Nairobi.

The initiative was unveiled during AI Everything GITEX Kenya 2026 and is designed to strengthen Africa’s AI ecosystem by providing locally controlled infrastructure, cloud computing resources, research support, and innovation networks. Hosted at iXAfrica’s NBOX1 data centre facility, Qubit Hub aims to create an environment where African innovators can develop and scale AI solutions tailored to the continent’s unique needs.

The partnership brings together expertise across multiple areas of technology development. Qhala will drive ecosystem growth through its QTrust platform, Amini AI will contribute sovereign AI and data infrastructure capabilities, Angani will provide cloud computing services, and iXAfrica will host the hub’s infrastructure within its carrier-neutral data centre environment.

According to the partners, Qubit Hub will serve as a collaborative space for startups, researchers, developers, policymakers, and enterprises working to solve real-world challenges through artificial intelligence.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Shikoh Gitau highlighted the hub’s mission to tackle some of the key obstacles facing AI development in Africa. “With this partnership, we are solving for compute, talent and community,” Gitau said.

She further emphasized the importance of ensuring African innovators have access to the infrastructure and networks needed to build scalable solutions. The vision aligns with growing calls across the continent for greater control over digital resources, data storage, and emerging technologies.

As AI adoption accelerates globally, African startups are increasingly developing solutions in agriculture, healthcare, climate intelligence, education, and financial services. However, limited access to computing power and local infrastructure has often slowed growth. By bringing these resources together under one platform, Qubit Hub seeks to reduce those barriers and unlock new opportunities for innovation.

The initiative also reinforces Nairobi’s standing as one of Africa’s leading technology hubs, attracting investment and fostering collaboration across the region.

“We believe Africa’s AI future must be built within Africa,”

a spokesperson for the partnership said during the launch event.

“This initiative is about creating infrastructure that allows African innovators to compete in the global AI economy.”

As researchers, entrepreneurs, and institutions gain access to stronger local infrastructure, Qubit Hub represents more than a technology project, it is a step toward empowering African talent to shape the continent’s digital future. With collaboration, innovation, and homegrown expertise at its core, the initiative offers a hopeful vision of an Africa that is not only adopting AI but actively building it.
