Kenya is preparing to make financial history with the planned launch of East Africa's first artificial intelligence-focused Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), marking another significant step in the country's growing reputation as one of Africa's leading technology and innovation hubs.

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) announced that it aims to introduce the AI-focused ETF before the end of 2026. The fund is designed to give Kenyan investors easier local access to companies that are directly involved in artificial intelligence, rather than requiring them to invest through foreign markets. According to Reuters, the ETF is expected to track global AI leaders such as Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic, while trading in Kenyan shillings to help reduce foreign exchange risk for local investors.

The initiative reflects the rapid rise of AI as one of the world's most influential technologies and demonstrates Kenya's determination to ensure East Africa is not left behind in the global digital economy. It also comes as demand grows among younger investors seeking exposure to innovative industries with long-term growth potential.

NSE Chief Executive Frank Mwiti explained the vision behind the project, saying, "We want essentially to be able to bring a product to our market where the underlying basket is a reflection of companies that have a direct exposure to AI." He also noted that the exchange would proceed carefully, monitoring global market conditions before the final launch to protect investors.

Beyond expanding investment opportunities, the planned ETF could strengthen Kenya's capital markets by encouraging more local participation and reducing the need for investors to seek similar products overseas. The move aligns with Kenya's broader efforts to position itself as a regional leader in technology, digital finance and innovation.

As artificial intelligence continues transforming industries ranging from healthcare to agriculture and education, Kenya's proposed AI investment fund sends a clear message that African markets are ready to participate in the future of global innovation.

If successfully launched, the ETF could inspire other African exchanges to develop similar investment products, opening new doors for investors while supporting the continent's growing digital economy.
