Nvidia is reportedly in discussions to invest as much as $3 billion in SB Energy, a SoftBank Group-backed company developing a massive artificial intelligence data-centre campus in Ohio for OpenAI. The potential investment underscores the extraordinary scale of capital now being mobilized to build the infrastructure needed for the next generation of AI.
The proposed investment is part of wider negotiations involving Nvidia, OpenAI and SB Energy over financing for the Ohio project. Reports indicate that Nvidia could provide half of the proposed investment when the project agreement is signed, with the remaining amount potentially connected to SB Energy’s planned initial public offering. The discussions remain ongoing and have not been finalized.
The Ohio development is planned as a 10-gigawatt data-centre campus at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Portsmouth Site in Pike County. SB Energy is also planning new power generation to support the facility, illustrating how AI development increasingly depends not only on advanced chips and software but also on enormous supplies of reliable energy.
The project forms part of a broader push to expand computing capacity as businesses, researchers and individuals increasingly use AI for productivity, education, scientific research and digital services. OpenAI and SB Energy have previously highlighted the importance of building large-scale infrastructure capable of supporting growing demand, while also pointing to jobs, workforce development and economic opportunities for communities hosting these projects.
Nvidia’s potential investment therefore represents more than a financial transaction. It reflects the changing economics of the AI revolution, where computing power, data centres and energy infrastructure are becoming strategic assets.
As the discussions progress, the Ohio project could become another major milestone in the global race to expand AI capacity. The scale of investment may be daunting, but the ambition is equally significant: building technology infrastructure that can empower businesses, create opportunities and help more people benefit from the possibilities of artificial intelligence.
The future of AI will require bold investment, responsible development and strong partnerships. If these efforts succeed, the infrastructure being built today could help create tomorrow’s breakthroughs and open new doors for communities and innovators around the world.
