Ozzy Osbourne, the frontman for Black Sabbath and a pioneer of heavy metal music, has died at age 76, his family confirmed Tuesday morning.

In a statement, the Osbourne family said Ozzy died Tuesday "surrounded by love," though the cause of death remains unclear. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," the family stated.

Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, England, the working-class son of a toolmaker would grow up to become one of rock music's most enduring and controversial figures. Rising to fame as the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath in the early 1970s, Osbourne helped create the heavy metal genre with albums like "Paranoid" and "Master of Reality."

After being fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Osbourne launched a wildly successful solo career. His biggest hit, "Crazy Train" from his 1980 debut solo album "Blizzard of Oz," became an anthem that transcended generations and remains one of metal's most recognizable songs.
