Oilers Take Game 1 in OT Thriller Against Panthers

EDMONTON, AB (WBN) — The Edmonton Oilers pulled off an incredible comeback in Game 1 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, defeating the Florida Panthers 4–3 in overtime in front of a raucous Rogers Place crowd.

Connor McDavid showed why he’s the league’s best, notching two assists, including the crucial setup for Leon Draisaitl’s overtime winner. Draisaitl, showing nerves of steel, buried the puck for his ninth of the postseason and tied the NHL record for most OT goals in a single postseason (3).

It was a wild ride to overtime: the Panthers clawed back from a 1–0 deficit with three straight goals — Sam Bennett’s pair and Brad Marchand’s marker — only for the Oilers to storm back in the third. Goals from Viktor Arvidsson and Mattias Ekholm sent the game into OT, setting up Draisaitl’s heroics.

Goaltender Stuart Skinner, who’s had a few “puck-in-net” mishaps this postseason, was dialed in when it counted, stopping 29 shots and flashing the leather when needed.

Oilers fans are already planning the parade route, while Panthers fans are holding out hope for a repeat of last year’s seven-game heartbreak classic. Game 2 goes down Friday in Edmonton — if you’re not watching, we’re sending the hockey gods after you!
