After 25 years at Bayern Munich, German football legend Thomas Müller will play for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer for the rest of the 2025 season. The 35-year-old World Cup winner has officially completed what many are calling the biggest signing in Vancouver Whitecaps history.

The transfer process involved a crucial three-way arrangement between Vancouver, Bayern Munich, and FC Cincinnati. To complete the deal, Vancouver acquired Müller's Discovery Priority from FC Cincinnati in exchange for up to $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) - specifically $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money, $100,000 in 2026 GAM, and a conditional $100,000 in 2026 GAM. This discovery rights system allowed Cincinnati to profit from their initial claim on Müller without actually signing him.

Müller will land in Vancouver next week, on Aug. 13. His first press conference and training session with his new club is set for Aug. 14. Bayern Munich and German national team fans will be able to see their hero in action soon after his arrival.

Müller has confirmed that he'll make his Whitecaps debut at BC Place on Aug. 17 when Vancouver hosts their next home match. However, he would be eligible for selection in the team's next game on Aug. 9 against the San Jose Earthquakes.

The financial structure of the deal reflects MLS's unique salary cap system. The playmaker was willing to join the Whitecaps on a TAM deal worth $1.7m over the entirety of the 2026 campaign, but would pay Müller just $750,000 for the rest of the season. Müller is under contract for the remainder of the 2025 season with a Designated Player option for 2026.

Müller's illustrious career includes over 700 appearances for Bayern Munich, where he won 12 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and numerous other honors. The versatile attacking midfielder and forward also earned 121 caps for Germany, helping his country win the 2014 World Cup and finishing as the tournament's top scorer with five goals.

This move represents a significant coup for Vancouver, who currently sit second in the Western Conference. Vancouver are second in the Western Conference (45 points) at the Leagues Cup break. They made the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup final earlier this year, positioning themselves as genuine MLS Cup contenders with Müller's arrival.

For Bayern Munich supporters, this marks the end of an extraordinary era. Müller's legendary "Raumdeuter" style and incredible trophy collection with Bayern will now be on display in Major League Soccer, bringing world-class talent to Canadian football fans.
