When it comes to getting the most out of your workouts, your diet plays a bigger role than you might think. It’s not just about cutting calories or chasing the latest diet fad—it’s about making smart choices that keep your body performing at its best and recovering faster.
In my latest article on the T-Squared Vancouver Personal Training website, I dive into practical, no-nonsense nutrition advice that can make a real difference in your training.
First and foremost, whole foods are your best ally. While processed snacks and sugary drinks might be convenient, they’re not doing your performance any favors. Lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats deliver the nutrients your body needs to push through tough workouts and bounce back after them.
Breakfast is a key part of the equation. It doesn’t have to be complicated—a bowl of oatmeal with berries or eggs with whole-grain toast and avocado can set the tone for a productive day. If you’re training in the morning, even a banana with almond butter can help give you the energy you need without weighing you down.
Hydration is another piece of the puzzle. Water is essential, but if you’re working out hard or sweating a lot, don’t forget about electrolytes. Adding in coconut water or a balanced sports drink can help replace the minerals you’re losing.
Post-workout meals are just as important as what you eat before training. Eating a combination of protein and carbs within an hour of your workout can speed up recovery and reduce muscle soreness. Think grilled chicken with sweet potatoes or a smoothie packed with protein and fresh fruits.
I also share some tips on foods that can help with DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), like tart cherry juice, turmeric, and omega-3-rich salmon.
If you’re serious about training, treat your nutrition as part of your plan. Choosing whole, nutrient-rich foods over processed options is one of the best ways to stay strong, consistent, and healthy.
