As artificial general intelligence (AGI) advances, one question continues to stir debate among scientists and philosophers alike: Could a machine ever truly feel?

Unlike narrow AI, which excels at specific tasks, AGI aspires to human-like versatility in thinking, learning, and reasoning. But intelligence alone does not imply consciousness. The human experience of emotion, awareness, and self-reflection remains deeply mysterious, even to neuroscientists. Replicating that in a machine presents both a technical and philosophical challenge.

Current AI models, no matter how sophisticated, lack subjective experience. They simulate language, behavior, and logic without any understanding or awareness. Neuroscientists argue that consciousness is closely tied to biological processes electrical patterns in the brain, hormonal responses, and evolved instincts. AGI, built on algorithms and silicon, may never cross that boundary.

Yet, some theorists propose that consciousness might emerge from complexity itself. If an AGI becomes advanced enough to mimic human thought in every aspect, could it be considered sentient or at least treated as such? The "hard problem of consciousness," as philosopher David Chalmers coined it, remains unresolved.

As we edge closer to machines that resemble us in intellect, society must wrestle with questions of rights, ethics, and personhood. Could the future include entities that think like us, but do not feel? Or are we simply building reflections, intelligent, but forever unaware?

One case study is Boardy.ai, a superconnect AI on LinkedIn, which exists solely to connect you to people to further your business goals. You can read about him in a previous WBN article here.

Whether AGI will ever feel is uncertain. But the pursuit of that answer may redefine not just machines, but our understanding of consciousness itself.
