The UBC Division of Plastic Surgery will host Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day) on October 25, 2025, at the Life Sciences Institute West Atrium, bringing together 500-800 attendees to raise awareness about breast reconstruction options for cancer survivors.

With one in eight women facing breast cancer in their lifetime, and approximately 20% of mastectomy patients choosing reconstruction, the event addresses a critical need in the healthcare community. The free event runs from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, featuring expert presentations, patient testimonials, and an exhibitor space showcasing specialized services.

Growing Specialty Fields

The breast reconstruction landscape has evolved significantly, spawning specialized fields that support patients throughout their journey. Tattoo artists now create medical tattoos for nipple reconstruction, while specialized physiotherapists help patients regain mobility and strength post-surgery. Massage therapists trained in post-mastectomy care provide crucial lymphatic drainage support, and specialized bra makers craft custom garments for reconstructed breasts.

Safety Considerations

The history of breast implants reveals important safety implications that patients should understand. Since the 1960s, breast implants have undergone numerous modifications to address complications, particularly capsular contracture—where scar tissue forms around the implant, causing pain and hardening. Research shows most implant patients experience at least one serious complication within three years, with all implants eventually requiring replacement.

The FDA didn't regulate implants until 1976, and safety studies remain limited. Current research indicates silicone implants may leak into surrounding tissue and lymph nodes, potentially migrating to organs. Studies also suggest possible links to autoimmune symptoms and, rarely, anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Community Impact

BRA Day creates a vital platform for patients, families, and healthcare professionals to connect and share experiences. The event showcases the comprehensive care network available to breast cancer survivors, from initial reconstruction decisions through long-term follow-up care.

Registration is required through Eventbrite, with exhibitor applications due August 31, 2025. The event represents a crucial step in ensuring patients make informed decisions about their reconstruction options while connecting them with specialized support services.
