Canada Post workers have issued a strike notice set to take effect on Friday, May 23, beginning at 12 a.m. local time. This move follows a recent report by an industrial inquiry commission, which described Canada Post as “effectively insolvent” and recommended significant changes to its operations.
The commission, led by William Kaplan, called for the phased elimination of daily door-to-door letter mail delivery for individual addresses while advocating for the continued daily delivery to businesses and the establishment of community mailboxes where feasible.
The report also emphasized the need to amend Canada Post’s charter, criticizing current delivery standards as impossible to meet, and suggested restructuring to preserve the postal service’s role as a vital national institution. The commission’s recommendations follow last year’s strike that shut down postal operations for over a month during peak holiday shipping, costing small businesses an estimated $1.6 billion. In response, major competitors like FedEx and Purolator have raised freight rates.
While Canada Post plans to continue operations until the strike begins, the potential for widespread disruptions remains high. The organization has indicated that if CUPW initiates rotating strikes, delivery in unaffected areas will persist, but a full national strike would halt all mail and parcel deliveries and could prevent accepting new items. Remember, bills still need to be paid, even if you haven't actually gotten them—find alternative methods if delivery is delayed. Stay informed to prepare.
The situation underscores the importance for Canadians and businesses to prepare for possible delays, especially during this critical period when many rely on postal services for financial and personal documents.
