Vancouver, BC - Tourism BC convened industry leaders and stakeholders on June 18th, 2025 for a comprehensive workshop focusing on maximizing British Columbia's tourism opportunities ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with Vancouver serving as one of 16 host cities for the historic tournament.

The workshop, attended by over 200 tourism operators, hospitality professionals, and government representatives, emphasized the critical intersection between sports events and business tourism. With less than a year remaining before the World Cup kicks off, the session provided strategic insights on leveraging major sporting events to drive economic growth across the province.

"Sports tourism represents a transformative opportunity for British Columbia," said Tourism BC's senior director of destination development. "The FIFA World Cup 2026 will showcase our province to billions of viewers worldwide, creating unprecedented demand for our tourism experiences."

The workshop highlighted how major sporting events generate substantial business opportunities beyond match days. Hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, transportation services, and recreational activities all experience significant boosts during international tournaments. Industry data shows that World Cup host cities typically see tourism revenue increases of 20-30% in the year following the event.

Participants explored strategies for maximizing the tournament's impact, including developing sports-themed packages, enhancing visitor experiences, and building long-term partnerships with international tour operators. The session also addressed infrastructure readiness, with BC Place Stadium's 54,000-seat capacity expected to welcome fans from around the globe.

The symbiotic relationship between sports and business formed a central theme throughout the workshop. Major sporting events attract corporate sponsors, media organizations, and international business delegations, creating networking opportunities that extend far beyond the sporting competition itself. These connections often translate into ongoing business relationships and future investment in the region.

Workshop attendees received practical guidance on preparing their businesses for the influx of international visitors, including cultural sensitivity training, multilingual service capabilities, and digital marketing strategies to reach global audiences. Tourism BC emphasized the importance of delivering exceptional experiences that will encourage repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.

The June workshop builds on Tourism BC's ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 preparation initiatives, including the "Beautiful Seats" international marketing campaign and the BC Tourism FC program, which has been developing resources and training materials for the industry since early 2025.

As Vancouver prepares to welcome the world in 2026, the workshop reinforced that successful sports tourism requires coordinated efforts between sporting organizations, government agencies, and private businesses to create lasting economic benefits for communities across British Columbia.
