Let’s be honest—trends can be fun. They’re everywhere! On TikTok, Pinterest, TV shows... even your friend’s newly decorated apartment. But here’s a secret from an interior designer who’s seen it all: not every trend deserves a spot in your home.
Why? Because trends come and go—but you are here to stay. And your space should feel like a reflection of who you are, not just what’s popular for five minutes.
Here are 5 design trends that might look cool now... but can leave you feeling overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or even bored later:
1. All-White Everything
At first glance, it looks clean and fancy. But after a while? It can feel cold, empty, and a little... boring.
Don’t get me wrong—I love a crisp white wall or a white sofa if it fits the mood. But when everything is white, you lose warmth and personality. Homes should feel alive, not like a hospital.
👉 Try this instead: Add soft colors, cozy textures, or warm wood tones. Even a simple beige pillow or clay vase makes a big difference!
2. Matching Sets
You’ve seen them—those furniture sets where the bed, nightstands, dresser, and mirror are all the same. Sounds easy, right? But here’s the thing: it can make your home feel like a furniture showroom, not a cozy, personal space.
👉 Try this instead: Mix it up! A vintage nightstand with a modern bedframe? Yes, please. It’s about balance, not perfect matching.
3. Too Many Open Shelves
Open shelves look cute in magazines. But in real life? They collect dust. Fast. And if you don’t style them just right, they can look messy instead of magical.
👉 Try this instead: Mix open and closed storage. Put everyday stuff (like dishes or bathroom items) behind doors, and use one or two shelves to display special things you actually love.
4. Fake Decor That Tries Too Hard
Signs that say “Home” or “Eat” in giant letters. Faux books stacked for looks. Plastic plants that look like they’ve never seen the sun.
Here’s the deal: Your home doesn’t need to pretend. It just needs to feel like you.
👉 Try this instead: Decorate with real memories. A photo you love. A candle that smells like your grandma’s cookies. A rock you found on a hike. That’s the good stuff.
5. Overcrowding the Space
This one’s tricky. You see a cool chair. A fun lamp. That cute side table. Next thing you know, your room is stuffed.
And when your space can’t breathe… neither can you.
👉 Try this instead: Leave room for flow. For dance parties. For laying on the floor with your dog. Space is powerful. Don’t fill it just to fill it.
Choose You Over Trends
Trends might make a space look stylish for a season. But design that’s based on you—your heart, your memories, your vibe—that’s the kind of beauty that lasts.
So before you follow what’s “in,” ask yourself:
Does this feel like me?
If the answer is no, leave it behind.
