I’ve been a personal trainer in Vancouver for over twenty years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with everyone from beginners to weekend warriors, it’s this: strength training isn’t just for the gym rats. It’s for every one of us who wants to live better, move easier, and age without feeling like our bodies are falling apart before we’re ready.

I work out of a private studio inside the Sandman Hotel on West Georgia, right in the heart of the city. From my front door, I can watch the West End residents jogging to the seawall, see Yaletown professionals hurrying to the SkyTrain, and hear the roar of fans heading to BC Place. Downtown Vancouver is full of energy, but it’s also full of people whose bodies are paying the price of sitting, commuting, and grinding through long days at work.

That’s why strength training matters. It’s not about chasing six-pack abs. It’s about bending down to tie your shoes without your back seizing up. It’s about keeping your bones strong so you can still ski in Whistler or ride your mountain bike on the North Shore when you’re fifty. It’s about standing tall in a meeting, not hunched over like your spine is giving up on you.

When I train clients, men and women alike, I start by stripping away the noise. Forget the complicated trends or the influencer tricks on Instagram. Real strength comes from simple, progressive, well-coached training. You build lean muscle, and that muscle keeps burning calories long after you’ve left the gym. You move better, you carry yourself differently, and you don’t feel fragile anymore.

I’ve seen it firsthand. Mark, a 48-year-old client, came to me with chronic back pain. Within months, he was deadlifting safely and moving like the pain never existed. Sarah, 42, told me she hated her posture and lacked confidence. After three months of strength training, she was standing taller, feeling leaner, and carrying herself like she owned every room she walked into.

Strength training is the great equalizer. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Bay Street banker, a West End retiree, or a weekend warrior riding the trails in Squamish. Your body thrives when you train it to be stronger. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that Vancouverites want to feel strong enough to keep doing the things they love, whether that’s mountain biking, paddleboarding in False Creek, or just walking the seawall with friends.

So here’s my challenge: step away from the treadmill, stop worrying about cardio alone, and start picking up some weight. If you’ve never done it before, that’s where trainers like me come in, to make sure you do it safely, confidently, and without the intimidation of a big-box gym.

In this city, where we pride ourselves on health, lifestyle, and getting outdoors, strength training is the missing piece for too many people. And if you ask me, it’s the secret to staying not just fit, but resilient, well into the decades ahead.
