I’ve trained people in Vancouver for more than two decades, and one trend keeps standing out: men in their 40s and 50s are showing up with the same complaints. Sore backs. Tight hips. Low energy. They tell me, “I can’t recover like I used to.”
Biologically, they’re right. By midlife, testosterone and growth hormone naturally decline. Recovery slows, and years of sitting at desks or commuting across the city leave their mark. Yet many still try to train like they did in their twenties. That often leads to injury, not progress.
In my Downtown Vancouver studio, tucked inside the Sandman Hotel near BC Place, I take a different approach. We begin with mobility and posture before adding strength. I tell clients, “Form before force. Quality before quantity.” Once they can move without pain, then we layer in progressive strength training.
John, a 45-year-old office worker, came in with chronic back pain. After three months of mobility drills and carefully coached lifts, he was not only pain-free but back playing recreational hockey. His story reflects what research has been showing for years: smart, consistent training improves strength, energy, and overall quality of life in midlife men.
Convenience also matters. Many of my clients are downtown professionals with just an hour to spare. Having access to a private studio with showers, towels, and even a pool for recovery makes it easier for them to stay consistent.
The broader point is simple. For men over 40, training doesn’t need to stop — it just needs to evolve. The focus shifts from chasing numbers to building resilience, protecting joints, and keeping the body capable for the long haul.
I see it as a positive change. Midlife brings experience and discipline that younger men often lack. With the right structure, those strengths translate into lasting results.
