The grand unveiling of GPT-5 promised a leap into next-generation AI brilliance, but instead, users were met with confusion, glitches, and frustration. For many, it felt like watching a rocket launch only to see it sputter mid-air. The excitement quickly turned into a rallying cry for fixes, with social media lighting up in a storm of criticism.

The Launch That Missed Its Mark

On August 7, OpenAI rolled out GPT-5, its most advanced AI yet, designed to switch seamlessly between lightning-fast responses and deep, thoughtful reasoning. Expectations were sky-high; GPT-5 was meant to be smarter, faster, and more versatile than anything before it.

However, the debut was far from smooth. Users reported that GPT-5 struggled with basic tasks, such as math, directions, and fact recall. The “auto-router” feature, intended to determine when to employ deeper reasoning, malfunctioned, making GPT-5 appear slower or less capable than its predecessor.

The Pain of Saying Goodbye

The frustration deepened when legacy models, including the much-loved GPT-4o, were removed for most users. GPT-4o had become more than just a tool; it had a personality and style many had grown attached to. Losing it felt like losing a familiar colleague or friend, especially when GPT-5’s tone and behavior felt less personable.

OpenAI’s Damage Control Plan

To rebuild trust and calm the storm, OpenAI moved quickly:

  • Restored GPT-4o access for Plus users
  • Began fixing the model-switcher bug
  • Temporarily doubled Plus user rate limits
  • Promised future customization so users can pick their preferred model
  • Hosted a live Reddit AMA where Sam Altman personally addressed concerns

The GPT-5 launch serves as a reminder that even the brightest innovations can trip over their own ambition. But with swift fixes, restored features, and renewed transparency, OpenAI still has a chance to turn GPT-5 from a rocky debut into the AI milestone it was meant to be. The next few weeks will decide whether GPT-5’s story becomes one of redemption or a cautionary tale.
