Vancouver, BC – When Canada was named Partner Country for HANNOVER MESSE 2024, Westcoast German News saw an exciting opportunity to bridge our two communities. As a publication serving the German-speaking community in British Columbia, covering the world's leading industrial trade fair seemed like a natural fit. We explored funding opportunities and made preliminary plans to attend, hoping to report on Canadian innovation and the strong economic ties between Canada and Germany.

Unfortunately, the logistics and funding didn't come together, and our team had to watch from afar as Canadian companies showcased their technological prowess in Hannover. While disappointing at the time, that setback has led to an unexpected silver lining.

Fast forward to 2026, and HANNOVER MESSE returns with Brazil as Partner Country. The event, running from April 20-24, will feature Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opening the fair on April 19. Brazil's "The Industry of Today" presentation will highlight innovation, sustainability, and the country's role in climate-neutral manufacturing across multiple pavilions.

But here's why we're perfectly content to stay home this time: Vancouver is hosting the FIFA Congress in 2026! While HANNOVER MESSE showcases industrial innovation in Germany, our city will be welcoming dignitaries and representatives from every country participating in the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19. The FIFA Congress brings together football's global leadership for this prestigious gathering ahead of the tournament.

For Westcoast German News, covering the FIFA Congress on home turf presents an incredible opportunity to serve our community. We'll be reporting on German, Swiss & Austrian football federation representatives, diplomatic exchanges, and the international atmosphere right in our backyard. This gathering of global football leadership represents a unique moment for Vancouver on the world stage.
