Web Summit Vancouver returned to the Vancouver Convention Centre from May 11–14, drawing more than 20,000 attendees from across the globe. The event brought together entrepreneurs, investors, media professionals, and technology leaders, cementing Vancouver's reputation as a premier destination for innovation. Beyond the keynotes and exhibitions, the conference served as a powerful engine for deal-making.

Canada's Trade Commissioner Service organized curated business-to-business matchmaking sessions, connecting local companies with international partners and investors, while Simon Fraser University and Crown Corporation InBC used the platform to announce a new $20-million venture fund. Premier David Eby framed the event plainly: "This is part of what we're doing to expand our presence internationally."

The FIFA World Cup, set to run through the summer with seven matches at BC Place, is amplifying that momentum considerably. The province has projected the tournament will attract over one million out-of-province visitors between 2026 and 2031, generating more than $1 billion in additional spending and $1.7 billion in tourism industry output for B.C.

Downtown Vancouver's hotel sector is already preparing for hotel occupancy to peak at nearly 96 percent during match days, with room revenues projected to run roughly 76 percent above rates seen at previous major sporting events.

The business community isn't leaving the opportunity to chance. The Province has established "BC Business House," hosting a series of events aligned with match days to connect global executives and investors with B.C. companies in priority sectors. British Columbia (B.C.) is intentionally leveraging this global convergence to advance trade, attract investment, and accelerate commercial partnerships. Business and government leaders from British Columbia invite businesses, investors, and other stakeholders to explore investment and economic opportunities at BC Business House during the tournament.

The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade's president, Bridgitte Anderson, put it directly: "With the world's attention on Vancouver, we have a unique opportunity to demonstrate why British Columbia is the place to do business, innovate and grow."

Together, these two events are giving Vancouver a rare dual platform — positioning the city simultaneously as a global technology hub and a world-class host city at a critical moment for trade diversification.
