Every May, the University of British Columbia (UBC) honours the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22) with Biodiversity Days, a month-long celebration of the rich species, genes, and ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.
Hosted by the UBC Botanical Garden in collaboration with the SEEDS Sustainability Program, the 2025 program features a wide variety of events to engage the public, students, and researchers in learning about and protecting biodiversity.
This year’s fifth annual Biodiversity Days features dozens of in-person and virtual events. From morning bird walks and multilingual garden tours to family nature walks, entomology-focused Nature Club activities, and a month-long Campus Bioblitz, the programming offers something for all ages.
Notable highlights include the sold-out “Goth Butterflies” night walk at UBC Farm, Science Rendezvous at Nitobe Memorial Garden, and an Indigenous-led workshop on the cultural importance of cedar bark at the Museum of Anthropology.
Localizing the global biodiversity effort, UBC's events draw attention to Southwest BC’s unique ecosystems and the efforts being made to protect them. The Bioblitz invites community members to log species around campus on iNaturalist, contributing to a growing database of local biodiversity observations.
"Biodiversity Days creates opportunities for our community to learn, explore, and take action for nature,” said organizers from UBC Botanical Garden. “It’s a celebration, but also a call to awareness and stewardship.”
Funding for the events is made possible by the UBC Botanical Garden Community Outreach Fund and the SEEDS Sustainability Program. With many events already sold out and more planned throughout the month, UBC continues to lead in showcasing how science, culture, and community can come together to champion environmental responsibility.
