On April 12, the Chan Shun Concert Hall at UBC welcomes one of the most significant evenings of Indigenous music Vancouver has seen in years — a rare double bill uniting Susan Aglukark and throat-singing duo PIQSIQ for a single, unmissable night.

Susan Aglukark is a towering figure in Canadian music. The first Inuk artist to win a JUNO Award, she arrives this spring bearing a remarkable milestone: the 30th anniversary of This Child, the landmark album that reshaped the landscape of Indigenous music in Canada. An Officer of the Order of Canada, a Governor General's Performing Arts Award recipient, and the author of a newly released memoir, Kihiani (2025), Aglukark brings to the stage not just songs but the full arc of an extraordinary life in art and advocacy.

Joining her are PIQSIQ — sisters Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik — who are doing something genuinely thrilling with the ancient Inuit tradition of katajjaq throat singing. Nominated for a 2026 JUNO Award for Global Music Album of the Year for Legends, the duo pairs their voices with live looping techniques to conjure immersive Arctic soundscapes. The Vancouver Sun has called their music "riveting… and truly haunting." In reclaiming a practice that was once outlawed and nearly erased, PIQSIQ transforms every performance into an act of cultural defiance and joy.

Together, these artists represent the full, extraordinary breadth of northern Inuit creativity — from folk and pop to the ancient and evolving. This is not simply a concert. It is a celebration of resilience, identity, and the enduring power of voice.
