Movember originated in 2003 when a group of friends in Melbourne, Australia, decided to bring back the moustache as a means to raise awareness about men’s health, particularly prostate cancer.
The concept quickly evolved into a global movement, encouraging men to grow mustaches throughout November while raising funds for men’s health initiatives. This annual event aims to spark conversations about health issues and remove the stigma surrounding men’s health.
Today, Movember continues to thrive, fostering discussions about critical health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Participants, affectionately known as "Mo Bros" and "Mo Sistas," engage in various fundraising activities and events throughout the month.
In Vancouver, the Movember movement has gained traction, fostering community involvement in numerous ways. Events across the city, including in Kitsilano, are held to raise funds and spread awareness. Local businesses often sponsor "Moustache March" parties, health seminars, and fun runs, attracting participants of all ages.
The Vancouver Mo’ Run, typically held during the last week of November, encourages both runners and walkers to participate in a fun, community-centered event that supports the Movember Foundation's initiatives. Participants can enjoy a festive atmosphere while promoting vital conversations about men’s health.
