The Chan Centre at UBC was alive with harmony last Saturday as Chor Leoni’s The Big Roar celebrated its 10th anniversary with a powerful showcase of choral talent. More than 250 singers, representing five distinct ensembles under the Chor Leoni banner, performed to a near-capacity crowd, culminating in a moving mass choir finale that brought the audience to its feet.

The concert featured performances by Chor Leoni’s core ensemble, the internationally acclaimed Leonids, and three youth-focused choirs: MYVoice, MYVoice PRÉLUDE, and the Emerging Choral Artists. Each group presented its own set, highlighting a diverse repertoire that ranged from classical choral pieces to innovative contemporary works.

MYVoice, a program for singers aged 12 to 24, introduced a new Coquitlam chapter this year, while MYVoice PRÉLUDE made its debut with a vibrant performance by students in grades 5 through 7. The Emerging Choral Artists, a mentorship program for young tenors, baritones, and basses aged 18 to 30, impressed with their precision and passion.

The grand finale saw all performers—youth, emerging artists, professionals, and veterans—joining forces for a stirring group performance. The powerful blend of over 250 voices created Canada’s largest lower-voice choir, delivering a message of hope, unity, and belonging through music.

Thanks to a generous $25,000 sponsorship from TD Bank Group, over 800 $5 community tickets made this extraordinary event accessible to a broader audience.

Chor Leoni’s The Big Roar continues to stand as a beacon of musical inclusivity and mentorship, reaffirming its mission to connect people through the transformative power of song.
