The Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, accompanied by principal guest director Rachel Podger, embarks on their Western Canada Tour this week with Brilliant Baroque—a carefully curated program that has already captivated audiences across continents.
The program showcases handpicked masterworks by Bach, Handel, Telemann, Avison, and Lully, jointly selected by Tafelmusik and the virtuoso violinist Podger. Brilliant Baroque has proven itself a true world traveler, having toured South Korea in autumn 2024 across six sold-out performances. The tour's crowning moment came at the grand finale of the 35th EAGON Music Concert series, where Tafelmusik performed the winning composition from the annual "Arirang Arrangement Contest," bringing the festival's "long journey of sharing emotions through music to a grand conclusion amidst the enthusiastic response of many audiences."
When Brilliant Baroque premiered in Toronto last winter, it "premiered to packed houses and raucous applause," affirming the program's universal appeal. Critics and audiences alike have been mesmerized by Podger's artistry and her extraordinary rapport with the ensemble. As one reviewer noted, "Podger was spectacular on the violin but perhaps more importantly drew something remarkable and rare from Tafelmusik, who played with passionate commitment."
Tafelmusik's trademark "synergy" creates an immersive experience that physically engages listeners. One audience member captured this magic perfectly: "we chuckled, exhaled, and our eyes moved, as they often do, into an inward personal space, where we keep beauty, in our minds, just for ourselves."
The tour arrives in western British Columbia on November 14th with a performance at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Victoria. Vancouver audiences have eagerly awaited Tafelmusik's return, which takes place on November 15th at 7:30pm at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, with general admission choral loft seats now available. The tour continues to Nanaimo on November 17th and concludes in Kelowna on November 19th—perfect opportunities for baroque enthusiasts hungry for more musical brilliance.
