A groundbreaking study by the Swiss Business Hub Canada has revealed the substantial economic footprint of Swiss enterprises across the country, with Western Canada playing a smaller, yet effective, role in this transatlantic business relationship.
The comprehensive report, titled "Swiss-based Businesses in Canada: a Footprint," documents 322 Swiss companies operating throughout Canada, collectively generating 54,000 skilled jobs. While Ontario dominates with 59% of these companies, other provinces in Canada showed significant Swiss investment, with 26% of companies based in Quebec and 8% in British Columbia.
British Columbia's Swiss business landscape includes diverse enterprises spanning multiple sectors. Notable examples include Swiss Skid Steer, a Vancouver-based equipment company, and VSHN, a technology firm that has established operations in Vancouver. The hospitality sector is represented by establishments like Swiss Lodge B&B, while global giants such as Lindt & Sprüngli maintain Canadian subsidiaries, with Lindt & Sprüngli (Canada), Inc. established in 1994.
The financial and industrial sectors are well-represented through companies like UBS Bank, construction equipment leader Hilti, mining giant Glencore, and reinsurance powerhouse Swiss Re. Local businesses like Erwin's Bakery in Kamloops, BC demonstrate the diverse range of Swiss entrepreneurial ventures taking root in Canadian soil.
Switzerland has emerged as Canada's second-largest trading partner on the American continent, with bilateral trade showing remarkable growth. Swiss exports to Canada have increased by an average of 8.2% annually since 2012, reaching 3.8 billion Swiss francs in 2022. This growth is driven by agricultural products, precious metals, and watches, while chemical and pharmaceutical products remain the dominant sector at 62% of exports.
As Switzerland's seventh-largest source of foreign direct investment, totaling 33.8 billion Swiss francs, these companies represent more than mere statistics—they embody a thriving economic partnership that continues strengthening ties between Switzerland and Western Canada's dynamic business environment.
