Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is bringing an electrifying evening of contemporary dance to Vancouver this February, marking the company's first BC tour in a decade featuring full repertoire beyond their annual Nutcracker performance.
The acclaimed ballet company will perform a dynamic double bill on February 9 and 10, 2026, at 7:30 pm at The Centre Vancouver. The evening showcases two powerful works: the modern classic Carmina Burana and the West Coast premiere of T'əl: The Wild Man of the Woods.
Opening the program, Carmina Burana explodes with athletic movement and sensual virtuosity. Set to Carl Orff's pounding score, Argentine choreographer Mauricio Wainrot's bold choreography moves through five vignettes celebrating life's pleasures—from gravity-defying leaps to primal urgency to romantic tenderness. A Canadian audience favourite since 2002, the work highlights the company's remarkable versatility.
The evening concludes with T'əl: The Wild Man of the Woods, an Indigenous-led contemporary work by BC choreographer Cameron Fraser-Monroe, a member of the Tla'amin Nation and alumnus of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. This gripping ballet retells a traditional oral tale of a young woman who ventures into darkness to rescue her sister from T'əl, a sinister figure who steals children at night.
"In many Indigenous cultures, history is not written down but passed down through Elders, so it felt natural to share an oral history from my home," Fraser-Monroe explains. The ballet features narration by Tla'amin Elder Elsie Paul in both Ayajuthem and English, an original score by JUNO-nominated composer Cris Derksen, and stunning costumes by Navajo designer Asa Benally.
"We are privileged to bring this compelling double bill to Vancouver audiences for an unforgettable evening of visually stunning and breathtakingly daring choreography," says Christopher Stowell, RWB Artistic Director.
The Winter 2026 BC Tour also includes performances in Powell River, Chilliwack, Vernon, Salt Spring Island, Courtenay, and Nanaimo.
