Perched atop Little Mountain at 125 meters above sea level, Queen Elizabeth Park is a 130-acre urban sanctuary offering panoramic views of Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains. Established in 1939 and named during King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's royal visit, the park has evolved into a multifaceted destination blending horticulture, recreation, and cultural experiences.
Natural Beauty and Attractions
The park's crown jewel is the Bloedel Floral Conservatory, a geodesic dome housing over 500 exotic plants and more than 100 free-flying tropical birds. Adjacent are the Quarry Gardens, transformed from former basalt quarries into vibrant floral displays. The Arboretum, Canada's first civic collection of exotic and native trees, offers shaded pathways ideal for leisurely strolls. The Rose Garden, located on the south-western perimeter of the park, was built in 1967 to commemorate Canada’s Centennial. It contains many rose varieties including hardy hybrids such as the Parkland and Explorer series developed in Saskatchewan.
Recreational Activities
Visitors can engage in various activities, including a pitch-and-putt golf course, tennis courts, and the Little Mountain disc golf course. The duck pond provides a serene spot for relaxation, while the park's open spaces are perfect for picnics and outdoor games.
Public Art
Be sure to see Photo Session, a bronze figurative sculpture of a man photographing three people, by J. Seward Johnson, Junior. This was a gift to the park from the artist in 1984.
The park's most famous sculpture is Knife Edge-Two Piece by internationally renowned British sculptor Henry Moore. Located on the plaza to the east of Bloedel Conservatory, it was donated to the Park Board by Prentice Bloedel. The bronze sculpture is one of three copies; the others can be found in front of the Houses of Parliament in London, England, and at the Rockefeller Estate in New York.
Four sculptures by Cameron Kerr, from Campbell River, BC, are located in the plaza. The marble sculptures were commissioned by the City of Vancouver and are on temporary display outside the Conservatory.
The love locks sculpture entitled, Love in the Rain by Vancouver artist Bruce Voyce, was installed at the lookout above the Quarry Garden in August 2016. Sweethearts are encouraged to 'lock in their love' by affixing a padlock to the sculpture.
Weddings and Events
The Celebration Pavilion, a modern venue with retractable glass walls opening to a beautifully landscaped patio, is a sought-after location for weddings and special events. The capacity for a ceremony is 100, including any vendors staying on-site. For receptions, the capacity for a seated reception is 48 and for a standing cocktail reception is 65, using the indoor and outdoor patio areas. Nearby, Seasons in the Park restaurant offers fine dining with sweeping city views, making it a popular choice for receptions and romantic dinners.
Wildlife and Safety
The park is home to various wildlife, including coyotes. The Stanley Park Ecology Society advises visitors to avoid feeding wildlife and to report any aggressive coyote behavior to the appropriate authorities. Call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-800-663-9453 to report an aggressive or threatening coyote.
Accessibility and Amenities
Queen Elizabeth Park is wheelchair accessible, with paved pathways and designated parking areas. Public restrooms and drinking fountains are available throughout the park.
Upcoming Developments
The Vancouver Park Board continues to enhance the park's features, focusing on sustainability and visitor experience. Recent initiatives include improved signage and the introduction of native plant species to support local biodiversity.
Whether you're seeking a tranquil escape, planning a special event, or exploring Vancouver's natural beauty, Queen Elizabeth Park offers a diverse array of experiences for all visitors.
