Local organization opens doors to entrepreneurs seeking wellness and community connection
Vancouver small business owners, among other members of the public, have a unique opportunity to step away from their desks and onto the water this November 2nd. A Breast in a Boat (AIAB), a dragon boat paddling team for breast cancer survivors, is offering a complimentary introductory session open to anyone interested in trying the sport.
The free paddle session takes place Sunday, November 2 at 10:15 AM, launching from Creekside Community Centre in Olympic Village. The program welcomes the first 10 registrants, with a registration deadline of Wednesday, October 29 at 6 PM.
"This is an excellent opportunity for small business owners who often neglect their own wellness while building their enterprises," says Barb Lawrence, New Member Contact for AIAB. "Dragon boating offers both physical activity and community connection—two elements entrepreneurs frequently sacrifice."
The two-hour session includes all necessary equipment and instruction. Participants will learn paddle basics, complete warm-up exercises, and spend an hour on the water before cooling down. An optional brunch follows for those interested in extended networking.
No previous paddling experience is required. The organization provides life jackets and paddles, though participants should bring their own gloves—paddling, kitchen rubber, or gardening gloves all work. Attendees should wear comfortable athletic clothing appropriate for the weather, closed-toe shoes with hard soles, and bring valuables in a waterproof bag.
The venue is easily accessible via public transit, with both the Expo Line (Science World/Main Street Station) and Canada Line (Cambie Street Station) nearby. Paid parking is available at multiple locations throughout the neighbourhood.
Beyond physical fitness, dragon boating offers small business owners a chance to disconnect from daily demands and connect with a supportive community. The team emphasizes inclusivity and welcomes paddlers of all abilities.
Interested participants should contact Barb Lawrence directly through the AIAB website at www.abreastinaboat.com. Spaces are limited to 10 people on a first-come, first-served basis.
