🌊 Earthquake and Tsunami Overview

A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula late Tuesday, shaking the Pacific Rim and triggering tsunami advisories across the northern Pacific, including British Columbia.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake’s final magnitude at 8.8, making it one of the strongest globally in the past decade. The epicenter was in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, a deep subduction zone known for producing some of the world’s most powerful quakes.

  • Russia’s Kuril Islands saw initial tsunami waves of 3–4 m in Severo‑Kurilsk.
  • Japan’s Hokkaido recorded smaller waves around 30–40 cm.
  • Alaska’s Aleutian Islands experienced localized surges, prompting brief evacuations.

🚨 Impact in British Columbia

EmergencyInfoBC issued a tsunami advisory for Zones A–D, which include:

  • Haida Gwaii
  • North & Central Coast
  • Outer Vancouver Island
  • Juan de Fuca Strait

Key details for the south coast and Vancouver Island:

  • Predicted wave arrival times:
    • Langara Island: ~10:05 p.m. PT
    • Tofino: ~11:30 p.m. PT
  • Expected wave height: Under 30 cm, but capable of creating strong and hazardous currents.

While no flooding is expected, officials warn that piers, marinas, and river mouths remain dangerous during the advisory.

🌎 Regional Pacific Update

  • Alaska: Tsunami warnings in the Aleutian Islands have been downgraded, with no major damage reported.
  • Russia: Minor flooding and infrastructure damage in Severo‑Kurilsk.
  • Japan & Hawaii: Recorded minor waves, with advisories issued and later lifted.

🧭 Safety Guidelines

  • Stay off beaches, piers, and coastal trails until the advisory ends.
  • Do not attempt to watch the waves, small tsunamis can produce deadly currents.
  • Follow official alerts from EmergencyInfoBC.
