Vancouver, BC – In a rare and awe-inspiring marine encounter, a well-known grey whale nicknamed "Little Patch" has been stealing the spotlight in English Bay and along the West Vancouver shoreline. Easily recognized by the distinctive white patch on its side, Little Patch has surfaced not just from the ocean depths—but into the hearts of Metro Vancouver locals.

A veteran of the Pacific coast since 1991, Little Patch has typically been spotted around the Puget Sound region. This visit to Vancouver is something special—an urban whale-watching experience that feels like nature crashing the city’s daily grind.

“I’ve lived in Vancouver for over 20 years,” said Kits Beach resident Angela Singh. “I’ve never seen anything this majestic this close to shore.”

Experts like Erin Gless from the Pacific Whale Watch Association confirmed the whale’s ID and noted its unexpected travel route. “He’s been one of the earliest grey whales to explore this region regularly,” said Gless. “But English Bay is a rare treat.”

Marine scientists suspect that shifts in ocean temperature and food supply may be prompting grey whales to extend their range. The silty, shrimp-rich waters of Vancouver’s bay areas may now be providing an attractive buffet for this curious traveler.

Whale watchers are reminded to admire respectfully—Canadian law mandates keeping 100 meters away from marine mammals. Little Patch may be calm, but he’s still a massive, living torpedo with a tail the size of a paddleboard.

As residents share breathtaking photos and videos, this rare visitor reminds us of the delicate balance between urban life and ocean life. In a city known for its mountains, beaches, and sea-to-sky spirit, Little Patch’s presence is both a surprise and a celebration.
