On May 13, 2025, the Liberal federal government made a landmark move by appointing Evan Solomon as Canada’s first Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation. This newly established portfolio reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a national strategy for responsible, ethical, and forward-looking AI development.
Solomon, a well-known former journalist and Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, has been tasked with overseeing the advancement of Canada’s AI capabilities, ensuring AI safety, promoting digital trust, and integrating emerging technologies into public policy. He will also be responsible for enforcing standards set out in the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act and coordinating with agencies like the Canadian AI Safety Institute.
In addition to his AI role, Solomon has been named Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). This agency supports business innovation and job creation across Canada’s most populous region, aiming to drive inclusive economic growth.
Solomon’s dual portfolio places him at the heart of both Canada’s digital transformation and regional economic development. His department will engage with stakeholders across sectors, including the Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence and FedDev’s network of local entrepreneurs, to position Canada as a leader in global innovation.
This appointment marks a significant shift in how Canada governs emerging technologies, pairing visionary digital leadership with tangible economic support mechanisms. With AI’s rapid global expansion, Canada aims to be proactive, competitive, and aligned with its democratic values.
