Lest We Forget the Freedom We Earned
Today, Canadians pause at 11 a.m. on November 11 to honour Remembrance Day, a solemn moment rooted in the end of the First World War when hostilities ceased at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

Since those early observances, this day has evolved into our collective act of gratitude for the more than 2.3 million Canadians who served and the over 118,000 who paid the ultimate price.

The poppy worn on our lapels is more than a symbol; it’s a living reminder of the cost of freedom. As we lay wreaths, bow our heads, and hold silence, we reflect not only on past wars but on the peace we enjoy today, the peace that allows Canadians to dream, to start businesses, to pursue innovation, and to build communities.

For entrepreneurs, especially, this freedom is both a privilege and a responsibility. Because others stood firm in far‑flung fields, we now stand free in boardrooms, co‑working spaces, and marketplaces. Our liberty to chart our own path, launch ventures, serve clients, and build legacies traces back to the courage of those who bore arms in defence of democracy.

So, as you mark the two‑minute silence this morning, consider this: The chance you have to take risks, to build something new, to mentor others, these are direct beneficiaries of the sacrifices remembered today. Let the quiet be not just for ceremony, but for reflection: How will you honour that freedom in your life and your work?

In honouring their memory, let us also commit to live with purpose, and to build with the same courage those before us displayed. We remember them so that we might live freely and live meaningfully.
