Remembering Terry Fox
One of my personal vivid memories is when I was a physiotherapy student and I followed the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope journey across Canada. Terry running on his prosthesis day after day, month after month inspired me. His vision and tenacity to continue his run every day continues to inspire me to never give up on what I'm passionate about.
And today, his vision continues in a yearly Terry Fox Run promoted in our Canadian community through our school system and nationally in our communities.
Every September, Canadians lace up to honor one of the country’s most enduring heroes: Terry Fox. In Kitsilano, schools and community members alike will join the 45th annual Terry Fox Run, continuing a tradition that combines fitness, education, and fundraising for cancer research.
The national event takes place on Sunday, September 14, 2025, with the Terry Fox School Run scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2025. Across Canada, more than 10,000 schools are expected to participate, making it one of the largest youth-driven fundraising initiatives in the nation.
In Kitsilano schools, the Run is about much more than physical activity. Teachers and students form leadership teams that handle logistics, fundraising, and community engagement. Students set goals, organize pledge drives, and sometimes host themed days or challenges to encourage donations. The funds raised go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation, supporting groundbreaking cancer research.
On Run Day, the emphasis is inclusivity. Students, staff, and sometimes families take part in a non-competitive walk or run, typically held in schoolyards, tracks, or nearby community routes. The aim is not speed, but solidarity—mirroring Terry’s own Marathon of Hope.
Education is a core component. In the weeks leading up to the event, schools share Terry’s story through assemblies, classroom activities, and multimedia resources. The goal is to ensure every generation understands not just the Run, but the determination and resilience of the young man who inspired it.
After the event, schools often celebrate achievements with certificates, announcements of fundraising totals, and community recognition.
The Terry Fox Foundation: From Marathon of Hope to Global Impact
Founded in 1980 following Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, the Terry Fox Foundation has become a cornerstone of cancer research funding in Canada and worldwide. Over the past 45 years, the Foundation has raised more than $900 million for cancer research. Its impact extends across multiple areas, from early detection and prevention to precision medicine, immunotherapy, genomics, and drug development. The Foundation also funds studies into many cancer types, including blood, breast, brain, lung, and rare cancers. Guided by Terry’s vision, the organization continues to inspire millions and drive breakthroughs in cancer treatment and care.
