I've watched Kiteboarders at Squamish as well as off the beaches in Vancouver out towards UBC. The athleticism is inspiring and exhilarating for me even watching from the shoreline!
Squamish - a Kiteboarder's Dream
Squamish, British Columbia—tucked between Whistler and Vancouver—is a kiteboarder’s dream. At the head of Howe Sound, it boasts strong, predictable thermal winds and epic mountain views that make it a world-class spot for this exhilarating sport.
From May to September, Squamish experiences daily thermal winds ranging between 15 to 25 knots, typically starting around 10 or 11 AM and continuing into the evening. These steady breezes, combined with flat waters, offer perfect conditions for both freestyle tricks and cruising. However, the water remains cold year-round, necessitating the use of wetsuits, gloves, and booties for comfort and safety. https://squamishadventure.com/portfolio/squamish-kiteboarding/
Key Launch Sites
- The Spit: This narrow landform at the confluence of the Squamish River and Howe Sound is the primary launch site. Managed by the Squamish Windsports Society (SWS) from May 15 to September 15, it offers amenities like rescue services, air compressors, and gear protection mats. Access requires a day-use fee or seasonal membership.
- Nexen Beach: Located on the opposite side of the estuary, Nexen Beach provides an alternative launch with onshore winds. While it has its challenges, such as obstacles in the water, it offers a different experience for riders.
Learning and Equipment
For those new to kiteboarding or looking to refine their skills, local schools like Squamish Watersports and Aerial Kiteboarding offer lessons ranging from introductory courses to advanced training. These institutions also provide equipment rentals, ensuring that visitors have access to quality gear.
Beyond Kiteboarding
Squamish's appeal isn't limited to kiteboarding. On days when the wind is calm, visitors can explore hiking trails, rock climbing spots, or take in panoramic views from the Sea to Sky Gondola. The town's vibrant community and natural beauty make it a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Whether you're a seasoned kiteboarder or a curious beginner, Squamish offers an unparalleled experience where wind, water, and mountains converge. https://squamishadventure.com/
