Empower Yourself For Your Next Doctor's Visit!

As a physician, I’ve seen it time and again: I enter the exam room, the patient and I talk for 15 minutes, and just as I’m wrapping up, they say, “Oh, one more thing…”  Sadly, that “one more thing” is usually the thing they really came in for.

Healthcare visits are often short. Not because your concerns don’t matter. It’s the system we’re in. But there’s a way to make those minutes count: come prepared.

Before your visit, jot down what’s been bothering you, even if it feels minor. Bring a list of symptoms, medications (including supplements), and any recent changes in your health or lifestyle. Most importantly, write down your questions. I can’t stress this enough-doctors want your questions. These help us focus on what matters to you.

Be honest. If something’s confusing, say so. If you forgot to take a medication or didn’t understand a recommendation from last time, speak up. We’re not here to judge. We’re here to help.

Also, don’t be afraid to bring a family member or take notes during your visit. It’s your health, and you deserve to leave with clarity, not confusion.

From both the clinical and insurance side, I’ve seen that informed patients get better care. That starts with one simple step: show up ready to talk.

Because a prepared patient is an empowered one.
