NASA has awarded a major five-year contract worth up to $150 million to Houston-based MacLean Engineering and Applied Technology Services LLC (METECS) to develop advanced simulation and software services for space vehicles and robotic systems.
The Simulation and Advanced Software Services II (SASS II) contract, beginning in October 2025, marks the second time METECS has secured this prestigious award. The company previously held the original SASS contract from 2020 to 2025, demonstrating NASA's continued confidence in their capabilities.
Under the new agreement, METECS will lead development of critical space technology simulations, including guidance and navigation systems for spacecraft across all flight phases, robotic manipulator systems, and human biomechanical modelling for astronaut countermeasure devices. The contract also encompasses on-board computer system simulations, surface interaction modelling for planetary missions, and training systems that integrate human operators.
Two Houston-area companies will serve as key subcontractors: Tietronix Software Inc. and Vedo Systems LLC. This partnership leverages the region's concentration of aerospace expertise near NASA's Johnson Space Centre.
"This award demonstrates NASA's ongoing trust in our work quality and confidence in our support of human spaceflight programs," said John MacLean, METECS president.
METECS brings extensive experience supporting NASA's most ambitious missions, including the Orion spacecraft, Human Landing System, Lunar Gateway, and Artemis lunar program. The company's expertise spans simulation technology, software development, robotics, and systems analysis across multiple industries.
Tietronix Software has earned recognition through numerous NASA awards, including the prestigious JSC Exceptional Software Award in 2017. The company serves diverse clients from Houston's school district to medical institutions and defence agencies.
Vedo Systems specializes in human-rated autonomous systems and AI implementation, with previous collaborations involving NASA, Axiom Space, and defence contractor Lockheed Martin.
The contract reinforces Houston's position as a hub for space technology innovation, with all three companies strategically located near Johnson Space Centre to support America's expanding space exploration initiatives.
