The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) has received a $5 million grant from Google.org, the philanthropic division of Google, to spearhead a national push for artificial intelligence (AI) education in Canada. The funding will help Amii create a cross-country consortium of 25 post-secondary institutions to integrate AI-focused content into their existing course offerings, with the goal of reaching over 125,000 students.
The initiative targets a broad academic audience—not just computer science students—reflecting a growing demand for AI literacy across diverse industries. “Companies are looking for that [AI] literacy in an incoming workforce that isn’t necessarily in the education they’re getting in college and university,” said Amii CEO Cam Linke.
Rather than dictate a rigid curriculum, Amii will empower institutions to shape the materials collaboratively. The content is expected to cover foundational AI concepts, deployment practices, and an overview of the evolving AI landscape.
“This initiative is about putting the skills to use AI tools into the hands of the future builders, and I think that starts with students,” said Sabrina Geremia, vice president and managing director of Google Canada.
While Canada has long been recognized for leadership in AI research—particularly in deep learning and reinforcement learning—the country has lagged in implementation. A recent Deloitte report cited by Geremia notes that only 26 percent of Canadian organizations have adopted AI, compared to 34 percent globally.
Amii, founded in 2002 through a partnership between the Government of Alberta and the University of Alberta, has been a key driver of Canada’s AI sector. It also received $1.1 million from Google last year for its Autonomous Drinking Water project, which brought AI-powered water treatment systems to underserved communities.
With this new funding and national collaboration, Google and Amii aim to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world application. Their shared hope: to cultivate a future-ready workforce equipped to lead Canada into the next phase of AI innovation.
