In 1925, quantum mechanics revolutionized the field of physics, providing a groundbreaking framework for understanding the behavior of matter and energy at the smallest scales. Now, a century later, the global community is celebrating 100 years of quantum theory with the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, as declared by UNESCO.

Quantum science has moved far beyond theory. Today, it influences medicine, computing, communication, and even the arts. Technologies like quantum computers and quantum encryption are redefining the limits of what’s possible. The legacy of pioneering thinkers such as Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and Wolfgang Pauli lives on in today’s innovation-driven society.

MQV (Mathematics, Quantum, and Visualization) and its partners are commemorating this centennial milestone with a rich program of events, exhibits, and educational initiatives. These are tailored for a wide range of audiences—from students to researchers and the general public.

A highlight is the special series “MQV-Einblicke – 100 Jahre Quantenwissenschaften und woran wir heute forschen” ("MQV Insights – 100 Years of Quantum Science and What We Are Researching Today"), which explores both the history and cutting-edge research of quantum science.

Journalists, Science Communicators, and Content Creators are especially invited to get involved this year:

  • Learn about quantum by exploring the resources at quantum.gov.
  • Highlight any quantum content you’ve already produced.
  • Create new content about quantum science and the diverse careers in the field.
  • Share your work on social media using the hashtags #IYQ2025 and #QuantumYear.

Vancouver is set to host Web Summit from May 27–30, 2025, marking the event’s first appearance in British Columbia. One of the largest gatherings in the tech world, Web Summit is expected to bring together innovators, investors, and industry executives from around the globe. As part of the week’s events, UBC Blusson QMI will open its doors to delegates for a tour and innovation showcase on May 26, 2025.

The showcase will highlight research in quantum science & tech, commercialization opportunities, and the institute’s advanced nanofabrication capabilities. Expressions of interest are now open, with limited availability for two tour sessions: 10:00 am–12:00 pm and 2:00 pm–4:00 pm on May 26, 2025.

For more information, please contact UBC Blusson QMI’s Communications & Partnerships Manager Zad Abbasi (shahrzad.abbasi@ubc.ca). Also, remember to check back regularly to discover new events, stories, and ways to be part of this global celebration of quantum science and technology.
