Vancouver offers a rich historical landscape, distinguished by numerous sites that captivate and inspire curiosity. This series highlights little‑known stories behind notable individuals, organizations, and inventions that originated right here.

Our first “DID YOU KNOW” factoid is that Vancouver is the birthplace of the Green Peace movement. In 1971, a group of peace activists and environmentalists in Vancouver formed the Don’t Make a Wave Committee, united by concern over U.S. nuclear tests planned for Amchitka Island, Alaska. They chartered an old fishing boat and attempted to sail into the test zone to “bear witness” and force a cancellation. Though the test went ahead, the action captured public imagination and media attention.

This boat was named Green Peace, later merged into Greenpeace when the words didn’t fit on fundraising buttons. For more than 50 years, the supportive allies and friends of Greenpeace have grown this organization to be the largest environmental campaigning organization in the world.

Stay Tuned for our next “DID YOU KNOW” later this week!
