Rick Boyko’s legendary career in advertising spans over three decades and is defined by groundbreaking creativity, leadership, and a dedication to cultivating the next generation of talent. His journey began at Leo Burnett in Chicago as an art director working on the United Airlines account. Eager for new challenges, he moved to Los Angeles to join Chiat/Day, where over nine years he crafted award-winning campaigns for brands like Mitsubishi Electric, Pizza Hut, Foster Farms, Home Savings, and Nike.
In 1989, Boyko joined Ogilvy & Mather in New York, eventually becoming Co-President and Chief Creative Officer of Ogilvy North America. He was the first creative executive since the early 1970s to rise to the top of the agency’s management, helping to drive Ogilvy to be named Agency of the Year by Advertising Age in 2000. Boyko's leadership reshaped the agency’s creative culture, integrating teams and launching initiatives that set new industry standards.
A firm believer in mentoring young talent, Boyko created the "Young Guns" program at Ogilvy in 1999, offering promising creatives a unique space to grow and innovate. Many of those mentees went on to become leaders in their own right. He also launched an in-house design group under Brian Collins, spearheaded the reissue of David Ogilvy’s classic book Confessions of an Advertising Man, and formed "The Syndicate"—a network of independent creative agencies collaborating with Ogilvy on high-impact projects.
In 2003, Boyko stepped away from Ogilvy to become Director and Professor at the VCU Adcenter, later renamed the VCU Brandcenter. Under his guidance, the program doubled in size, transitioned to the School of Business, and was named “Most Innovative Business School in the World” in 2012. His leadership helped cement the school’s reputation as a leading institution in branding and creative strategy.
After leaving VCU in 2012, Boyko founded Sparkstarters, an executive training company aimed at unlocking creativity within organizations. Even in retirement, his passion for the industry continued with the production of Inspiration, a documentary series that explores the creative journeys of advertising legends.
Boyko has served on numerous industry boards and earned countless accolades throughout his career. His most meaningful recognition came in 2024, when he was inducted into the Creative Hall of Fame—an honor that celebrates a career dedicated to excellence, innovation, and mentorship.
