In 2025, BC Ferries is transitioning to a reservation-only system on select routes, a decision driven by operational challenges and aimed at enhancing service reliability. This shift is primarily influenced by the need to manage high demand and limited vessel capacity, especially during peak travel periods.

The decision was made by BC Ferries' leadership, including CEO Nicolas Jimenez, in response to mechanical issues with key vessels like the Coastal Renaissance, which have significantly reduced available sailings. Jimenez emphasized the importance of reservations, stating, "If you don't have a reservation, please don't come," highlighting the strain on the system and the necessity for advance bookings.

Implementation of the reservation-only policy is already underway on major routes, particularly those between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. For instance, as much as 85% of deck space on these routes is now allocated to reservations, leaving minimal capacity for drive-up passengers.

Travelers are encouraged to book their sailings in advance to secure a spot. BC Ferries has also introduced more 'Saver' fares to incentivize off-peak travel and alleviate congestion. For those without reservations, alternatives include travelling as foot passengers, carpooling, or considering other modes of transportation.

While the idea of purchasing a rowboat or kayak is whimsical, it's not a practical solution for most travelers. However, for recreational purposes or short-distance travel, options like the Oru Lake foldable kayak or the Intex Seahawk 2 inflatable boat might be worth exploring.

In summary, BC Ferries' move to a reservation-focused system aims to improve efficiency and reliability amid operational challenges. Travelers should plan ahead and secure reservations to ensure smooth passage.
