The Swiss Society of Vancouver, Swiss Mountain Range Association, Swiss Consulate in Vancouver, and Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce invite everyone to celebrate Swiss National Day on Saturday, July 27th at the Mountain Range Chalet, 4141 Quarry Road, Coquitlam. Entrance is $10, with free admission for children under 16.
Historical Roots and Modern Significance
This BC celebration honours Switzerland's national holiday, officially observed on August 1st throughout the Alpine nation. Swiss National Day commemorates the Federal Charter of 1291, when three Alpine cantons—Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden—formed a historic alliance that became the foundation of modern Switzerland. While the founding has been celebrated since 1891, it only became an official holiday in 1994.
More Than Mountains and Cowbells
Switzerland, nestled in the heart of Europe and bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein, is home to approximately 8.97 million people. This landlocked nation, known for its precision engineering, banking sector, and democratic traditions, extends far beyond the stereotypical images of cowbells and mountain peaks that often define it internationally.

Back in Switzerland, National Day celebrations feature traditional elements including bonfires, fireworks, and patriotic speeches. Communities gather for outdoor festivities, folk music performances, and the sharing of regional specialties that showcase the country's culinary diversity.
Local Celebration Brings Alpine Heritage to BC
The day's festivities begin at 1:00 pm when gates open, followed by the bar and grill at 4:00 pm. Evening highlights include performances by Dorfmusik and the Swiss Society Choir at 7:00 pm, the singing of the national anthem at 8:00 pm, and a traditional Lampion parade at 9:00 pm perfect for families with young children.
The celebration features live performances by the Vancouver Swiss Choir and S-Bahn, alongside activities designed for children. Food enthusiasts can enjoy authentic BBQ fare including bratwurst and other traditional Swiss specialties that showcase the country's culinary heritage.
Last year's event, documented in the photo gallery on the Swiss Canadian Mountain Range Association's website, demonstrated the local Swiss-Canadian community's commitment to preserving and sharing their cultural traditions.
