The European Festival, held on Sunday, May 25th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Slovenian Society Hall in Burnaby, was a vibrant celebration of Europe’s rich cultural heritage. With food vendors, music, dance, and crafts from over a dozen European countries, attendees were treated to a diverse and energetic day of entertainment and community connection.
One of the highlights of the day was the final performance at 5:30 p.m. by the Alpen Platters, a local group specializing in traditional German Bavarian Schuhplattler dance. Based in Vancouver, the Alpen Platters have been keeping the tradition alive for decades, with many members having performed in Germany and Austria on tours in 2000 and 2005. Their joyful, rhythmic routines brought laughter and cheers from the crowd, closing the festival on a high note.
Schuhplattler, which originated in the alpine regions of Germany and Austria, is known for its dynamic movements—dancers slap their thighs, knees, and soles in sync with traditional music, often while wearing lederhosen. More than just entertainment, Schuhplattler began as a courting ritual where men would showcase their strength, coordination, and humor to impress potential partners. Today, it’s a unique blend of cultural expression, community bonding, and physical exercise.
Interested in trying it? The Alpen Platters welcome new members of all backgrounds. No experience is necessary—just a good sense of rhythm and a willingness to have fun. Practices are held Wednesday evenings at the Polish Zgoda Friendship Society.
Westcoast German Media was there to capture the performance—and yes, we have the photos to prove it. Schuhplattler is more than dance; it’s living heritage. Come stomp, clap, and laugh your way into a tradition that spans generations.
