ABBOTSFORD, BC – June 18, 2025 - It was supposed to be a close one. Instead, Game 3 of the Calder Cup Finals turned into a statement. The Abbotsford Canucks, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, blasted the Charlotte Checkers 6–1 to take a 2–1 lead in the series, and they made it look easy.
And while Abbotsford soared, Alberta’s top team crashed. The Edmonton Oilers fell 5–1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, marking another painful year without a Canadian NHL champion. That’s 32 straight and counting.
Third Period Takeover
It was 1–1 after 40 minutes. Then Abbotsford flipped the switch.
Linus Karlsson snapped home a low shot to put the Canucks up 2–1 just 90 seconds into the third. Arshdeep Bains followed that up with a pair of goals, one off the rush, one off a deflection. Phillip Di Giuseppe and Tristen Nielsen tacked on two more to complete the five-goal frame.
Six goals, five different scorers, and one loud Abbotsford Centre.
Silovs Stands Tall
Arturs Silovs stopped 28 of 29 shots, only allowing a first-period goal from Oliver Okuliar. After that, he shut the door completely, flashing calm rebound control and sharp anticipation. He’s now 2–0 in the series and staking his claim as playoff MVP.
Charlotte was buzzing early, but Silovs’ confidence between the pipes gave the Canucks the edge they needed to build momentum and bury it.
Alberta's NHL Blues
While the AHL Canucks took care of business, their NHL northern neighbors fell short again. Edmonton’s Game 6 loss means a second straight Stanley Cup for Florida, and another heartbreak for a Canadian franchise that hasn’t hoisted Lord Stanley’s mug since 1993.
If there’s any consolation for BC fans, it’s that Abbotsford might bring a Cup back to British Columbia, just not the one most expected.
