A $13 million initiative aims to expand sport access for youth in communities throughout British Columbia ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
British Columbia is making a major investment in grassroots sport. The Province, viaSport, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC have joined forces to fund and build up to 20 soccer mini pitches across B.C., injecting $13 million into a legacy initiative designed to bring accessible, year-round sport infrastructure to underserved communities ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The partnership signals a commitment not just to hosting a world-class tournament, but to ensuring its benefits reach children and families far beyond the stadium.
A Pitch for Every Community
Each soccer mini pitch will measure 18 metres by 36 metres and feature a modular, multi-sport surface suitable for both rural and urban settings. Designed to transform under-used spaces into vibrant community hubs, the pitches can also host ball hockey and lacrosse, maximizing their value year-round. The Province and viaSport are contributing $10 million to the effort, with Vancouver Whitecaps FC adding $3 million to bring the vision to life.
More Than Just Infrastructure
The initiative goes beyond simply building facilities. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, BC Soccer, and the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I·SPARC) will deliver programming and mentorship at each site, ensuring communities have the ongoing support they need to activate the spaces meaningfully. Indigenous communities will be represented in the site selection process, reflecting a deliberate effort to address longstanding inequities in sport access across the province.
Applying for a Mini Pitch
Communities eager to participate will have the opportunity to apply when the application process opens in spring 2026, managed by Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Installation is expected to begin in September 2026, with all pitches completed by December 2027.
A Legacy That Lasts
The mini pitch initiative represents exactly the kind of lasting impact a major sporting event should leave behind. By channeling World Cup momentum into permanent, community-owned infrastructure, B.C. is choosing to invest in its youngest residents — giving them safe places to play, connect, and grow. As the world turns its eyes to Canada in 2026, these 20 pitches will ensure that the beautiful game's biggest moment plants roots that endure for generations.
